Tropical Cyclone Impact and Forest Resilience in the Southwestern Pacific

چکیده
Tropical cyclones (TCs) can have profound effects on the dynamics of forest vegetation that need to be better understood. Here, we analysed changes in induced by TCs using normalized difference index (NDVI). We used an accurate historical database TC tracks and intensities, together with Willoughby cyclone model reconstruct 2D surface wind speed structure analyse how affect vegetation. segmented linear models identify significant breakpoints relationship between reconstructed maximum sustained (Wmax) observed NDVI. tested hypothesis rate change damage caused recovery time would increase according Wmax thresholds as defined widely Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale (SSHWS). showed most breakpoint was located at 50 m/s. This corresponds transition categories 2 3 SSHWS. Below this breakpoint, damages needed recover from these were negligable. found a second sharp for winds >75 suggested extremely intense tropical cyclones, which might more frequent future, cause extreme Nevertheless, high variation given Wmax. Further studies are integrate other factors exposure resistance well forests’ capacity disturbances.

Global warming shifts Pacific tropical cyclone location
[1] A global high‐resolution (∼40 km) atmospheric general circulation model (ECHAM5 T319) is used to investigate the change of tropical cyclone frequency in the North Pacific under global warming. A time slice method is used in which sea surface temperature fields derived from a lower‐ resolution coupled model run under the 20C3M (in which historical greenhouse gases in 20th century were prescr...
متن کاملImpact of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity in the North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating weather systems affecting the United States and Central America (USCA). Here we show that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) strongly modulates TC activity over the North Atlantic (NA) and eastern North Pacific (eNP). During positive IPO phases, less (more) TCs were observed over NA (eNP), likely due to the presence of stronger (wea...
متن کاملWestern North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity and ENSO
The influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific basin is examined. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), constructed from the best-track dataset for the region for the period 1950–2002, and other related variables are analyzed. ACE is positively correlated with ENSO indices. This and other statistics of the interannually varying tr...
